The Three Constantly Read Articles, became the most familiar of all Mao's works. These three essays - Serve the People, In Memory of Norman Bethune, and The Foolish Old Man Who Moved Mountains - were selected and promoted in the early 1960s because they provided models of correct behaviour and an introduction of Mao Zedong Thought with its core values of voluntarism, determination, and constant struggle. In 1968 the number of constantly read articles was increased to five with the addition of On Correcting Mistaken Ideas in the Party, and Combat Liberalism.
