Great Hall of the People

Constructed at breakneck speed in order to be ready for the 10th National Day celebration in October 1959, the Great Hall of the People is situated on the western side of the vastly enlarged Tiananmen Square. Designed in a style best described as Stalinist neoclassicism with Chinese characteristics, the Great Hall represented the new socialist democracy of New China.
