Open book

While the red vinyl covers of Mao's works became an iconic symbol of Mao Zedong Thought, mere possession was not enough. Considerable effort was expended to encourage party officials and the revolutionary masses to open the iconic covers and read the contents. Numerous Maozhang make use of an open-book motif, either by itself or combined with other symbols such as the red flag and flaming torch.
