Printed Steel

The image on this badge - Mao's portrait and the golden background - was printed directly onto untreated steel. This technique was normally used in the food packaging industry for biscuit tins and similar items. Where the printed surface has worn away around the rim, the underlying steel has oxidised. The steel has been pressed around a plastic insert that forms the reverse, in a manner similar to the metal lids of glass jars.
