The central role of the sunflower is clearly shown in the two badges below; where the Chinese people (here represented by a single flower head) bathed in the radiance of the red sun above are flanked on one side by three red flags (representing the General Line, the Great Leap Forward and the People's Communes), and on the other side by red books (representing Mao Zedong Thought). In the right-hand example the flower head is embellished with the character for "loyalty". Seven sunflowers represented the 700 million boundlessly loyal Chinese people.
