Waving

The left-facing right-handed wave is the commonest non-portrait image of Mao on Maozhang. These images are based on several different photographs, hence the variations in dress. The inscriptions that accompany the waving image are usually celebratory rather than exhortary.

According to Yu Hua (China in Ten Words, p15), Mao was the only person allowed to wave at the National Day parade as it passed; all the other members of the leadership on the Tiananmen balcony were expected to applaud.
