Flower-shaped

A sunflower shape was an obvious, although relatively uncommon, choice for Maozhang. Some had five lobes (petals) in imitation of plum blossom; while others had nine lobes (probably referencing the 9th National Congress). The surface of the lobes was usually stippled and could be embellished with symbols such as additional sunflowers or the hammer and sickle.
